Women's safety in Dhaka: on buses, rides and the street

Updated: · Nirapod

Harassment on buses, at stops and on the street is one of the most common problems women in Dhaka report, and most of it never reaches the police. These tips come from what women report on Nirapod and from public safety guidance.

On buses and at stops

  • Use the seats reserved for women where possible, or sit near other women or families.
  • If someone harasses you, say it out loud and tell the conductor; a public response often stops it and gets others to help.
  • At night, wait at a busy, lit stop rather than a quiet one, even if it means walking a little further.

Ride-sharing, CNGs and rickshaws

  • Check that the plate number, car and driver photo match the app before you get in, and ride in the back seat.
  • Share your live trip or location with someone you trust.
  • In a CNG or rickshaw, keep your bag on the side away from traffic (see avoiding snatching).

Walking

  • Plan your route on the Nirapod live map and avoid red zones and empty stretches after dark.
  • Keep one ear free of headphones and walk facing traffic.

Getting help

  • 999 if you are in danger now.
  • 109, the national helpline for violence against women and children, for advice and support.
  • Report what happened on Nirapod, anonymously if you prefer. Your report warns other women about the place and time, without revealing who you are.
