How to report a crime in Bangladesh: GD, case or online GD

Updated: · Nirapod

Many people in Bangladesh never report a crime because they are not sure what to file or where. Here is the short version.

GD or case?

General Diary (GD)Case
What it isA record at the police station that something happened or was lost.A formal complaint about a crime that starts a police investigation.
Typical usesLost phone, NID, documents or other items; threats; a missing person.Snatching, robbery, theft, assault, harassment and other crimes.
WhereAny thana, or online via Bangladesh Police Online GD.The thana with jurisdiction over the place where it happened.

Filing a GD online

  1. Go to gd.police.gov.bd or install the official Online GD app.
  2. Register with your NID, date of birth and mobile number; the app asks for a live photo to verify you.
  3. Choose the type of complaint, the district and thana, and give the time and place and what was lost (for a phone, include the IMEI).
  4. Submit. If the police accept it as a GD you receive a digital copy with the GD number and the investigating officer's details.

Going to the thana

  • Bring your NID, any documents (phone box with IMEI, receipts, photos) and the names of witnesses.
  • Write down the time, place, and a description of the people involved as soon as you can.
  • Keep a copy of what you file and note the officer's name.

Then warn your neighbours

A police record helps you; a Nirapod report helps the people around you. Reports appear on the live map, alert people nearby, and over time show which streets need attention. You can report anonymously, and other people can confirm what you saw.

If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 999 before anything else.
